Trump Considers Renaming 'Soccer' to 'Football'
His remarks came during the FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday, following a match in which Chelsea triumphed over Paris Saint-Germain with a 3-0 scoreline.
The event served as part of the build-up to the 2026 World Cup, which the United States will co-host with Canada and Mexico.
Trump, who was present at the game along with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, handed out medals and awards to both competing teams after the final whistle.
While speaking to reporters after the game, he was asked if he would support renaming the sport in the United States. “I think we could do that,” Trump responded to a news outlet, noting that football “can bring the world together.”
The term ‘soccer’ has long been part of American vocabulary, originating from ‘association football’. However, much of the global community — including the US’s 2026 co-hosts, Canada and Mexico — refers to the sport as ‘football’ or a regional variation of it.
Trump appeared to connect the idea of a name change with his wider political narrative.
He spoke of the nation’s perceived recovery, referencing recent diplomatic engagements in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE.
According to Trump, NATO leaders have told him the United States was “dead” a year ago but is now “the hottest country in the world.”
He added, “There’s a lot of truth to that, we were doing very badly as a country in an incompetent administration and now we have a hot country. It’s really hot. And I think the soccer is going to be hot here too,” as he shared with the news outlet.
